How important is customer service?

I have always tried to offer a personal friendly service to my clients and the fact that many, be they corporate, retail or private customers have been using my services, in some cases for over 20 years seems to suggest I must be getting it fairly right.

I was reminded of this last week when on Thursday we drove to Milton Keynes and stayed overnight for an early start at the Theatre the following morning, filming Spirit Productions fabulous new show, New Jersey Nights. On arrival, at what turned out to be a very nice hotel, we were greeted (actually not greeted) by a receptionist who simply lacked the most basic of customer service skills. Bothering to look up and say “Hello” is a good start! “M’s Charisma” of course is the memory we will take away and she let the rest of the team down, big time.

I contrast that with a fabulous local company I dealt with earlier in the week. Allfancydress.com. I’m off to Cologne Carnival next month and needed a costume. Having found the costume I was considering on their website, I did have a query and phoned them before ordering – helpful friendly advice from the lady I spoke to on what I was considering buying and equally friendly service from the man at the warehouse, when I went to collect it. With good customer service, a great range of stock and competitive pricing it has to be 5*s for Allfancydress.com.
