DVD “Disc not recognised”

Over the last few months of 2024, I had several enquiries regarding DVDs that were not recognised in a DVD player and no files could be seen when examined on a computer with Explorer.

This can occur for several reasons.

Obviously if the disc has been physically damaged, then although it may be a lost cause, but still worth a look. However the more likely causes are unfinalised DVDs made on a DVD recorder or disc camera or data corruption as a result of DVD rot, where the surface that contains the data breaks down.

Unfinalised DVDs may be fixed with the correct hardware, ie DVD recorder BUT given that every manufacturer uses different protocols, this merely complicates the situation.

The good news is that using the latest DVD recovery software the results have a high percentage of success, both with unfinalised discs and those with corrupt data.

Where recovery of the video content is achieved, then either a new DVD can be made or it can be converted to MP4 and copied to a USB stick.
